In short

Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee in German) is the emerald lake with a row of wooden boats and the sheer wall of Croda del Becco behind it. One of the most photographed spots in the Alps — which is exactly why it gets very busy in summer.

How to get there and parking

The lake sits in the Prags valley, ~100 km from Cortina and ~30 km from Dobbiaco. By car, take the SS49 to Val di Braies. There are several paid lots by the lake (per hour, pricey, fill fast). ⚠️ Important: in summer (roughly July–September) during peak hours 9:30–16:00 car access to the lake is closed without a pre-booked parking slot — either arrive earlier, or leave the car lower down and take the shuttle bus up.

When to arrive

One answer: early morning. By 7–8 am the lot is free, the light is soft, the water is a mirror and there's almost no one — that's when the best shots happen. By midday it's parking hell and a crowd on the pier. Alternatively, late afternoon when the buses leave.

What to do at the lake

The main thing — the lakeside loop: ~3.5 km, an hour at a gentle pace, almost flat, with views from every angle. Boat rental at the historic boathouse (per half hour) — that postcard scene. And of course the shot at the wooden pier on the north shore.

Seasons

Summer: emerald water, boats, greenery — the classic. Autumn: golden forests, fewer people. Winter: the lake freezes and the boathouse is buried in snow — surreal shots, but no boats. In spring expect ice melt and water clouded by snowmelt.
