Best Time to Visit the Dolomites: Month by Month

The Dolomites are good almost year-round, but the hiking season is short and August means crowds. Here's the month-by-month breakdown so you hit your window.

In short

The Dolomites are a section of the Italian Alps in South Tyrol and the Veneto, a UNESCO site. Weather and trail access depend heavily on the month, so "when to go" matters more here than for lowland destinations.

Hiking season: mid-June to late September

The main trekking window. Before mid-June there's still snow on the passes, many trails are closed, and the mountain huts (rifugi) haven't opened. From late June everything comes alive: trails are passable, huts are running, cable cars are open.

Month by month

June: green meadows in bloom, long days — but some high trails still hold snow, and part of the huts open only around the 20th. July: reliably warm, everything open, but afternoon thunderstorms start — head out early. August: peak season and peak crowds (Italy's Ferragosto on 15 August — jammed roads, +30% lodging). September: the best month — fewer people, still clear weather, larches turning golden. October: golden autumn and empty, but colder, some huts close, and the first snow is possible late in the month.

Best month — September

If you can choose — the second half of September. Fewer crowds than August, mostly clear weather, and the larches give a "golden autumn" in the mountains — the best time for photography. One caveat: nights are cold, so pack a warm layer.

Winter: skiing instead of trails

From December to March the Dolomites become one of the world's best ski regions (Dolomiti Superski, 12 areas, one pass). Hiking is closed, but the scenery is just as stunning — a different format.

What to plan for weather-wise

Mountain weather shifts within an hour: clear in the morning, a storm by lunch. Plan treks for the first half of the day, always carry a rain shell and a warm layer regardless of the month. Check the forecast the night before — and keep a backup low-altitude route for bad weather.
